The Lakes at Boca Raton Board of Directors has voted to change the procedures for election to the Board, effective January, 2012.
The current U.S. Senate-like structure of having one Board seat for each of our 10 subdivisions will be abolished. So will the current practice of Board candidates being elected only by owners from the subdivision where those candidates reside.
Starting in 2012, the entire community will vote on a list of candidates for every open Board seat, which is how the election of Directors was conducted prior to 2004. So if there are eight candidates vying for four seats on the Board of Directors, the top four vote getters will be elected.
Additionally, the size of the Board will be reduced from ten to seven Directors in 2012. Directors will be elected for staggered two-year terms – three will be elected in 2012, and four in 2013.
Any owner is eligible to be a candidate for the LABR’s Board of Directors, with two exceptions. The State of Florida passed a new law in 2011 which prohibits convicted felons and owners whose accounts are delinquent for more than 90 days from serving on HOA Boards.
The Board Candidate Form was mailed to all homeowners last week. If you intend to run for the Board at the January 23 Annual Members Meeting, your completed Candidate Form is due in the HOA office by December 15. It will be mailed to all homeowners along with an absentee ballot during the week of December 19.
